Bryan, To answer your question, I have mixed feelings about the question. Should a student have a criminal record for the rest of their life for hazing? It depends on if severe injury or death occurs. When I first joined the Marine Corps, my unit was assigned to Force Recon. During my MOS training, they realigned, and we became part of the air wing. The problem for many was the mentality Force Recon conditions someone too, and how they go about handling specific issues. For example, if someone was new to the unit, they got an initial hazing. You would get blindfolded, hogged-tied, and hung upside down in an old shed on the property. If you ran your mouth, you received a few punches. If you did not fight back, you might get left hanging upside down while everyone went to lunch. Many other things were also done, such as grabbing the new members and holding their heads in the toilet as they sang the Marine Corps Anthem. In today’s military, those involved would likely get courts-martial and kicked out of the service. Back then, it was done to see what kind of man you were, teach you to keep your mouth shut, and attention to detail. As another example, my instructor told me three times to keep my finger off the trigger until I was ready to fire.
