Does Designer Water Have Nutritional Benefits?
Supermarket shelves seem to be loaded with bottles touting the benefits of “smart” water. You can find water
with vitamins, water with electrolytes, water for energy, and even water for a good night’s sleep. Sales of
Glaceau Vitaminwater™ and SmartWater combined topped $1 billion in 2014.
Marketers are aiming designer water at everyone from athletes to people trying to recover from hangovers.
Designer waters can have a variety of different ingredients, including added sugar, extra caffeine, extra
sodium, and a wide range of vitamins. With zippy names and promises of health and hydration, they can be
tempting. But are they good for you? Do designer waters have a place in a healthy diet? Take a close look at
the arguments for both sides and see what you think.

YES
NO
If you cannot meet your vitamin needs from your diet, you may be able to get a percentage of them in these
bottles.
A recent study showed that many designer waters have an excess of the vitamins needed in a healthy diet.
Drinking too much of these products could lead to a vitamin overdose.
If you exercise for long periods in the heat or if you live in a hot place, you need fluids, and possibly electrolytes
to recover from your physical activity. Designer waters can provide electrolytes, and can encourage fluid intake.
Studies show that drinking water alone is perfectly adequate for recovery from most forms of exercise.
Designer water is more expensive than tap water and provides extra calories.
If they have less sugar and no phosphates, designer waters can be healthier than soda. People may be able to
use designer waters to wean off of soda
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend getting vitamins primarily from food. Food also contains fiber
and phytochemicals, among other things that promote good health.
Drinking plain old water can get boring, and dehydration can be a serious matter. If it is a matter of staying
hydrated or chronically being thirsty, it’s better to drink a designer water.
You can make water more interesting by adding lemon, lime, or cucumber slices or by drinking sparkling water.
