Week 10: Decolonial Feminisms Forum
Western feminist theories have been repeatedly criticized for privileging the social experiences of a regional minority, the global North, over other regions. As an example, we look at Chandra Talpade Mohanty’s objection to western constructions of “third world women”. We also examine Maria Lugones’ attempt to re-situate the concept of gender in its global context of coloniality. After assessing the objection of cultural essentialism that has been levelled against the idea of the coloniality of gender, we ask: what are the implications for women as a collectivity?
Week 11: Ecofeminism for global justice
This week we reflect on the significance of ecofeminist understandings of oppression and ideals for the achievement of global justice. Starting from the premise that gender domination and the domination of nature are inextricably linked, ecofeminists propose holistic alternatives to the dualisms and hierarchical structures of thought, which support logics of colonization and speciesism. After noting the impact of critiques of essentialism on western ecofeminist thought, we turn to the Reading inspirational work of Vandana Shiva.
