EXAMPLE DISCUSSION POST
What I found interesting about this week’s lectures and readings was that the intersectionality of race and gender is very nuanced in that it is so small that oftentimes it goes unnoticed in everyday discussion; people must make a conscious effort to point out when they are playing into these discriminatory factors. Crenshaw cites the case of violence against women as a prime example of this phenomenon. Something in particular that caught my attention during the lecture specifically was what Senator Boren said in response to the Violence Against Women Act of 1991; he said that “violence against women is not just in the inner cities but against all women.” Originally, I saw nothing wrong with this statement and nothing racially discriminating in what he had to say even with the proper context of the time this was said. It wasn’t until the professor highlighted that by saying “not just in the inner cities,” the subtext of the quotation in its entirety implies that violent crimes against women only occur in the inner cities which, in this time period, were implicitly racial. My own lack of perception of something right in front of me goes to show just how complicated these intersectionalities are and how even people who are trying to come into this with an open mind or are trying to think and act progressively get tripped up on them.
