Using the New York Times coverage of the last New York City Council elections, identify your City Council
Representative (if you live outside of New York City, pick a NYC zip code to use for this assignment. Once
you’ve done so, write a short essay of 500-600 words that includes:
A summary of your city councilor’s media exposure, including their main areas of interest when possible. You
can use the biographies on council.nyc.gov as a starting point for your research. Consider:
The Council Representative’s name
How long they have been in office
Their recent major policy initiative
Whether or not there was a successful outcome for their initiative and why
An overview of your district’s voting record, including the last council elections and the last presidential
primaries and general election.
A thesis and supporting argument answering the question, “does the city councilor really represent the
interests of their constituents?”
