Currently, in the private sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a woman typically makes 87 percent of the wage a man makes in a similar position with similar responsibilities. There are some who state that women are more expensive to employ, primarily due to women being the bearer of children and the extended time off typically required after the birth of a child. However, there are others who state that this constitutes a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, that women should be paid the same as men with similar positions and similar responsibilities. Even with the Equal Pay Act of 1963, signed into law by then-President John Kennedy, we still see these disparities in pay between the genders. Hence, the question I have for you is:
What steps can we take to ensure equal pay between genders for employment positions with similar responsibilities and similar duties?
