As information designers, we need to communicate our message clearly and effectively with hierarchy
(assignment 1), structure (assignment 2) and universal visual appeal through a natural balance of proportions.
(assignment 3/this week).
We can implement mathematical theory and objective principles to achieve this order and balance in our
designs while also creating a successful user experience. For this week, you will research and select model
cases of The Golden Ratio/Divine Proportion as exemplified in successful information designs. You are not
creating new designs, but selecting existing designs from your own research.
Please submit the following three design case studies as a pdf with each visual example and a description (or
diagram) of how your selections are successful models:
1. Golden Ratio* – please find an example of typographic hierarchy that shows how the golden ratio understood
as the proportions 1:1.618 is revealed in the typographic elements of the design. Your example can only
contain text or have both text and imagery, but you are only focusing on the text as hierarchy.
For example, if you have a design with 3 text sizes and your least important text is 10 pt, then multiply that by
1.618 to get your next important size = 16pt, then most important size = 25pt.
*The approximate type size is acceptable for your example.
2. Golden Spiral* – please find an example of a composition/layout that contains both text AND image elements
and shows how the placement of either a text or image element at the center of the spiral reveals the
importance of the message.
*The approximate type size is acceptable for your example.
2. Golden Spiral* – please find an example of a composition/layout that contains both text AND image elements
and shows how the placement of either a text or image element at the center of the spiral reveals the
importance of the message.
