A Comparison of Two Evidence-Based Practice Models/Frameworks

Please scroll to the end to read all the instructions for the final writing assignment. You will choose and compare two evidence-based practice models/frameworks in the final writing assignment. You will select one evidence-based practice model/framework developed by a nurse from your textbook, Models and Frameworks for Implementing Evidence-Based Practice. Your second, comparison evidence-based practice model/framework must be from a discipline other than nursing (but may include a nurse as one of several authors), and listed in this (SEE ATTACHMENT) based on the Mitchell et al article entitled, "A Thematic Analysis of Theoretical Models for Translational Science in Nursing: Mapping the Field" (SEE ATTACHMENT). For both evidence-based practice models/frameworks, you will search for, and identify articles to enhance your understanding of each model/framework. The first course assignment was designed to help you get started with finding resources about your non-nursing evidence-based practice model/framework. Assignment Rationale: To lead or support change within a particular practice setting as an advanced practice nurse with a doctorate, you will benefit from being versed in existing evidence-based practice models/frameworks. Deeply knowing the models which inform the integration of evidence into practice will facilitate transdisciplinary work, and interprofessional communication. In addition, you will learn how to search for resources to learn about existing models/frameworks in other disciplines to help understand how other disciplines approach evidence-based practice. How do Two Instructors Work Together to Grade this Assignment? Each faculty is primary reviewer for half of the papers and secondary reviewer for the other half. Each faculty independently scores each paper. We then review each other's feedback and agree upon a common score for the draft and final assignments. You receive the higher score, scores are not averaged. Having spent considerable time carefully reading the drafts and the non-nursing model/framework papers, we provide you with individualized comments. You may see notes written and signed by both faculty. What is the Role of the Teaching Assistant? The teaching assistant checks for AMA format and other formatting issues. The teaching assistant also verifies references and the accuracy of textual claims. The teaching assistant also confirms that the comments of faculty are viewable by you. Format Writing Style Use the AMA Style Guide (Links to an external site.)for professional, scholarly writing. The guide is linked to the course syllabus. Please write formatting questions to the final writing assignment discussion board to gain assistance from the teaching assistant or course faculty. Please post all formatting questions to the assignment discussion board. Audience Your audience for this paper is the colleagues you will work with in your selected, future practice setting. Please use the assignment Your Future Practice Setting to recall what you wrote about your future practice setting. You are writing to the audience with the purpose of informing them about two evidence-based practice models/frameworks. Please define all technical terms for your audience. Details Please paginate your document. Put a page number on each sheet. You can select the style and format of the page numbers. Please use the subheadings of the paper to separate the sections of your assignment. These headings correspond to the grading criteria and will ensure faculty do not miss reading a section of your paper. Dividing the paper into sections also improves the assignment readability. Ensure each paragraph has a topic sentence. Develop each paragraph using at least three complete sentences. Do not use bullet points as a paragraph. Please do not write more than 12 double-spaced pages (excluding title page and references), 1 inch margins, with a font size of 12. You can select the font type. Faculty will not read beyond page 12. Any sections beyond those 12 pages will be graded as 0. Title Page Use the following format for your title page, this will be the first page of your submission. Open your writing assignment in a compelling way. This is your opportunity to think about how you would start a conversation about evidence-based practice to your practice-based colleagues given your future role as an evidence-based practice leader. Be creative and clear in your introduction. Then use a separate paragraph, to clearly state the purpose of your assignment. The purpose of this assignment was to compare two models/frameworks for evidence-based practice from two different disciplines. Concretely name the models/frameworks you are comparing, and the disciplines of interest. Finally, state how your paper is organized so that the reader can easily follow the paper divisions. For example, this paper is divided into three sections. Section one will (state what is written in section one). In section two, (state what is written in section two). Finally, the third section, (state what is written in section three). Literature Review Methods For your non-nursing model/framework, please state how you conducted your systematic search (Note that this time, you will have your paragraph first and your table or tables will follow your paragraph) using a table and 1 three sentence paragraph (or more, if needed). Show your search results in an AMA formatted table, similar to the first assignment for this class. Your table can be single-spaced according to AMA format. Add an additional column (or row, if appropriate) in your table indicating how many resources you retrieved, read, and referenced to develop your paper. For your nursing model or framework, please report your results similarly. *** There is a handout for AMA formatted tables on the AMA Discussion Board as an example to be added after the library session. Remember to include the needed explanatory sentences with other relevant details with your table. The table does not exist alone in this section of the paper. For example, the dates of your search are not indicated in the table and other relevant search parameters you used may not fit inside the table. Brief Summary of Two Models/Frameworks Be sure to include all the elements you were asked to describe in the week 5 discussion board assignment. These included model purpose, intended users, type of model (e.g. as in research use, change, translation, research), assumptions and implications for use. The dimensions listed in chapter 11 of the textbook is a pretty comprehensive list (type, purpose, development, theoretical basis, levels, situation, users, function, testability) and may be useful to ensure you have summarized similar dimensions of each model/framework. Use the same topics and order to describe each model/framework. For example, if you wrote the purpose second when describing one model, write the purpose second when describing the comparison model. This will create a uniform writing style. Brief Summary of Evidence-Based Practice Model/Framework developed in Nursing State the title of the model/framework. State the purpose of the model/framework. Describe the model/framework overall. Aim to write no more than a 1 page summary describing the model/framework only. Use your work from the Week 5 assignment as a basis for beginning this section of the paper (refer to the note above). Brief Summary of the Evidence-Based Practice Model/Framework You Selected from Another Discipline State the title of the model/framework. State the purpose of the model/framework. Describe the model overall. Aim to write no more than a 1 page summary describing the model only. Be consistent with the format used when you wrote about the nursing model/framework. For example, if you described the elements of the model after the purpose in one nursing model, use the same order for the non-nursing model (refer to the note above). Comparison of Two Evidence-Based Practice Models/Frameworks The comparison of the evidence-based practice models/frameworks will comprise the bulk of this assignment. Use most of your writing pages for this section. Address each question as you compare the two evidence-based practice models/framework. Use subheading to organize your responses to a-e. Types of Evidence a. What types of evidence are advocated for use in each of the models/frameworks? State examples from each model/framework. Types of evidence pertains to the type of evidence advocated for use in the model/framework (not the history of how the model based on evidence was developed). What evidence does the model consider as valid to promote evidence-based practice? You will see a beginning list of ideas in the Table in Chapter 11 of your textbook. Please elaborate upon those ideas and go beyond listing types of research approaches, e.g. quantitative or qualitative research. We want you to be more specific with respect to types of evidence. Advantages and Disadvantages of the Types of Evidence b. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using these types of evidence? The question about advantages and disadvantages pertains to the evidence, not the model/framework per se. This will require you to thoughtfully consider what is helpful and not helpful about using certain types of evidence. This question requires you to synthesize your readings thus far in this course. Ethical Issues c. How are ethical issues or concerns addressed in the evidence-based practice models/frameworks? Do the models/frameworks allow for ethical issues to be assessed? How so? How not? Many models/frameworks do not directly state how they address ethical issues. Your role as an evidence-based practice leader is to attend to ethics in practice, however. You will use your CITI training and the articles provided about ethics to brainstorm how ethical principles are, or can be, addressed using the models/frameworks. How does the model allow for ethical issues to be assessed? You will need to think about how ethical issues could addressed using the models/frameworks you selected. Please explain your answers and define the ethical principles or issues of concern. Best Model to Generate New Approaches for Health Improvement d. In which of the two models/frameworks is it most possible for practice to be used as a basis to generate new approaches to improve health? How so? How not? Thus far, the emphasis in the field of evidence-based practice has been on encouraging practitioners and organizations to use research-based evidence in the provision of health care. In thinking about the models you selected, which of the two models has the potential for the generation of practice-based evidence? That is, which model can indirectly or directly allow for the systematic assessment, documentation, inclusion, evaluation, or sharing of practice-based knowledge. Detail the elements of the model which will allow for this to occur. The Evidence-Based Model/Frameworks I Prefer e. Given your intended practice setting and disciplines you will work with in that setting, which evidence-based practice model would you more likely use in your future role? Explain your choice. Recall the audience for your paper is the future intended practice setting you selected for use in the course and the disciplines you will work with in practice. Be sure to address these points in your rationale. Please remember to concretely explain your choice. Summary Write a 4-5 sentence paragraph conclusion to your paper. Do not introduce new information in this section. This is a summary of what you have written in the paper. Attachment: Attach any references which were not a part of this course to the Course Library of Additional Readings Discussion Board to share with others. This will help create a shared reading library for everyone in this course to use. In your message to the class, you may share what you felt was important about the article, if you like. References: You will also have a complete reference list, using the AMA format, of all the references you cited in your assignment. Be sure to correctly cite the chapter of the model/framework in the textbook, not just the textbook. The textbook is an edited text with some chapters written by the editors, but each chapter about a specific model/framework is written by the authors of the model. The way to reference a page using a Kindle is to use the location function, if you need to do so. Updated versions of Kindle can indicate page numbers. According to AMA, references are single-spaced.
