The article cites the case of Oregon resident Alyce Cheatham and how her having a POLST form was a relief to her daughter and a clear directive for her doctors with regards to the end-of-life wishes of the patient. Although it is not yet as established in other states as it is in Oregon, the POLST form program proves invaluable in providing health care professionals easy access to thousands of active forms to better honor patient end-of-life wishes especially those of the fragile or seriously ill. Discussion: The article “In Oregon, End-of-Life Wishes Are Just A Click Away”is a well-written piece on thePOLST form program. The article effectively highlights the advantages of the program not only for the medical professionals who have to make split-second decisions regarding end-of-life treatments, but also for the program’s potential in easing the burden of family members in making crucial decisions regarding the life of a loved one. More importantly, it is understood that with the POLST program, patients have control over their own end-of-life treatments. For healthcare administrators, the relevance of the POLST program to end-of-life treatments is important. For one, the program makes it easier for health care facilities to avoid unnecessary conflicts with patients and families over modes of treatments in end- of-life cases. For another, the program allows for the administration of treatments in accordance with what patients want, consequently upholding patient autonomy to the very end. Questions for Discussion: 1.
