Elaine’s Sample Introduction: Bipolar disorder is one of the most tragic of the mental illnesses.  It is less prevalent than major depressive disorder, with bipolar disorder affecting 0.3-1.5 % of the population worldwide over the lifetime, compared to estimates ranging from 1.5-19% (Weissman et al., 1996) for major depressive disorder.  However, it is one of the most debilitating of the mental illness, frequently affecting people in their teens (Goodwin & Jamison, 2007), and potentially affecting them throughout their lives, ultimately taking a mental, physical, and financial toll that is rivaled only by heart disease, in terms of its financial cost (Murray & Lopez, 1996) and its the effect on quality of life. One of the major issues contributing to the cost of bipolar disorder is that it is so frequently misdiagnosed. As many as 70% of bipolar patients are misdiagnosed during the course of their illness (Lish, Dime-Meenan, Whybrow, Price, R. A., & Hirschfeld, 1994).  This leads to delays in proper treatment that prolong, and even worsen the course of the disease. This paper proposes that the treatment of bipolar illness could be improved by a public health campaign to promote early diagnosis and treatment. 3.  Main body of the paper -  3-4 pages.Include 3-4 major points that provide an integrated review of the relevant literature.  Details of the symptoms, etiology, prevalence, and common treatments for the disorder.  Include any new research that will help people who have this mental illness. What is interesting about this disease? What research is being done that will help sufferers? Relate each point back to your thesis statement! 4.  Conclusion -  approximately 1 page.¬Summarize the main points of the paper,¬Identify areas for future research.
