Compare two different literary forms (for example, tragedy vs. novel) and explain how these genres function as different modes of philosophical thinking. Use two theoretical works from the class (Plato, Lukács) to explain the functioning of these works. Assess some of the limits and potential benefits of these determinate art forms. Is either of the modes you are comparing preferable for philosophical purposes? Explain why.
Your goal is to develop a philosophical argument in order to explain how a literary work or works function philosophically. Using philosophical ideas we have studied in the course, you need to develop an account of how literature as an art can function philosophically, and to reflect upon the philosophical content or insight generated by literary work. You should critically think about how literary art compares to philosophical thinking, what the limits of literature are, but also how literature enables different kinds of philosophical insight than more traditional works of philosophy. To develop a philosophical argument, you need to clearly define and develop the theoretical terms you are using to interpret literature, but you must also develop a carefully reasoned and justified explanation of how this occurs by discussing and analyzing the literature carefully. Thus, you need to both develop your own philosophical thinking and your own reading of literature texts in order to complete the assignment successfully.
