Competition Lab Write Up
Is a Competition lab write up between lentils and oats planted pots 8 different sets of pots. In data sheets given a graph needs to be done to show difference in growth of crop at different weed densities. Need to have p-values that are given.
Competition Lab Write Up
The format for this lab write up will follow a basic scientific journal style. If you are not familiar with this style you are encouraged to find and read some journal articles (preferably Weed Science or Weed Technology). If you need assistance finding journal articles ask your TA for help. Each student will complete their own write up using the combined data of the whole lab section. The competition labs write up needs to include the following elements:
? Title – Give the experiment a descriptive name.
? Abstract – Describe the experiment and results briefly in 300 words or less.
? Introduction – Briefly describe the problem and the questions trying to be answered with the experiment. Explain why it is relevant and provide background information that is relevant.
? Materials and Methods – Give a description of what you did, materials used, and the methods used for data analysis. This doesn’t need to be overly detailed, especially if the method or technique is widely known to your audience. It should provide enough information that the reader could repeat what you did. You need to include a table that show the treatments and list the densities planted. Diagrams of the planting patterns will not be necessary. Be sure to include relevant dates and locations.
? Results – Here you will present the data collected from the experiment in both graphical and written formats. Include graphs/charts that show the differences in growth of the crop at different weed densities over time and at the harvested stage. We are looking for how weeds effect crop production and growth. In a separate subsection, address the same things for intraspecific competition (treatments 1-4).
o Need to have P-values (and/or F-stat) and statistics provided to by TA.
? Discussion – Here is where you interpret the results and attempt to answer to the reasons for performing the experiment. Explain why the results you obtained may have happened (possibly due to weed ecology principles, experimental design, or technique). Include a discussion of ways to increase the competitiveness of the crop, if necessary, based on your results.
o How does this effect a grower with have populations of weeds?
o Is it possible to determine an economic threshold, control of the wild oats in necessary, from your results?
This should be a 4 to 8 pages, double spaced, 12pt. font, Times New Roman, with 1” page margins, and 5 scientific sources. Reminder: Don’t forget to label all figures, tables and graphs!!!
