Poetry Essay 100 Points
Essay Overview
For your Poetry Essay, you will compose a 6-page, literary analysis of one of the readings from The Norton Introduction to
Literature, which is due by the beginning of class on Friday, November 13th.
Your essay should take a detailed insightful position on one of the poetry readings, and explain why it matters to you and
why your reader should feel the same way. You should address one or more of the elements of poetry that we have discussed
in class: speaker, situation and setting, theme, tone, language, imagery, symbol, and sound. Since you have the benefit of
revision, you should expect to produce a mechanically sound and stylistic paper, one that clearly presents a thoughtful and
original position.
You will receive detailed feedback on your writing based on each of the elements outlined in the Essay Grading Rubric,
which has been posted to Etudes.
Prompt
Choose one of the below prompts to write your essay:
1. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot, a precursor to his seminal poem, “The Waste Land,” addresses
a number of modernist themes: an anxiety over time and aging, the fragmentation of meaning, and the alienation of
the self, to name a few. As a young academic, provide a research-driven analytic interpretation of one of these
themes in the poem. Discuss the poem’s meaning by using the literary terms we have reviewed in class. Finally,
speak to the allusions Eliot includes within the poem, or, if you feel especially ambitious, compare it to “The Waste
Land.”
2. Write an original analysis of one of the other poems from the poetry section of the Norton anthology (450-724)
3. Write an original analysis of one of the stories from Dubliners
Secondary Sources and Works Cited Page
In addition to your primary reading, you must cite at least two secondary outside sources that in some way strengthen your
essay. Your sources might provide additional evidence to support your thesis, illustrate a specific point you have presented,
or address the viewpoint of another writer with whom you wish to agree or disagree. If you are writing on Dubliners, you
may use sources included within the Norton Critical Edition.
The quality of your secondary sources also matters, meaning that academic or research-oriented sources will be valued for
credibility over simple Google searches or cultural blogs. While you are welcome to cite in-class texts such as class
discussions or peer essays, these should not be counted as outside sources. For the best sources, plan on visiting the library
for books and journal articles, which you may review as print copies or as electronic ones.
Cite your sources parenthetically in your essay, and then attach a Works Cited page as a separate page at the end of your
essay. A detailed annotated example of a Works Cited page has been posted to Etudes.

For this essay, pay close attention to the submission requirements, for these will affect your final grade. When you are
