Literacy Practitioners' Perspectives on Adult Learning Needs and Technology Approaches in Indigenous Communities Funding For Adult Online Literacy Program essay Funding for adult online literacy programs that is intended to facilitate adult learning has been lacking. Online literacy programs are instrumental in providing classes to a majority of adult learners. Through the use of online tools and technology, teachers are able to reach a wide variety of students, oppose to having the limits of physical classrooms. Adult learners has increased, and is expected to continuously increase; requiring online literacy programs to need more funding; for the increased numbers of adults that need help. This funding is needed for the development of online literacy programs for adults. Education is a key pillar to the development of any society. Adult education should be pursued to enable more people to better their lives. Askov et al. (2003) point out that only 3 -5% of adults, who need education are enrolled in classroom programs. They further explain that increasing the capacity of providing education in classrooms will not help, because of the variations, and constraints in adults’ lives; whereas, an online education offers the cheapest alternative. Teachers that employ the use of narrative learning over the internet provide adult students with an effective way of flexible learning. Rossiter and Clark (2008) point out that learning for adults is closely integrated with their life experiences. The ability of an online learning program to integrate narrative learning based on the student’s real life experience creates an enabling environment for adult learning. Institutions that receive government funds aimed at facilitating adult learning should invest more in online literacy programs. Sticht (2002) identifies more than four thousand state, local, and community based organizations receive funds each year to facilitate adult education. Increased funding will eventually help more individuals receive education and better their lives. During this research, I have gained the understanding of the primary role of the context, which appears to be an important part of the learning process. Nielwolny and Wilson (2009) argue that context in learning can either be dynamic, as societal and group interactions, or learning occurring within an individual’s mental frame. They argue that learning is unselective in context, and can occur in any situation. Adult education is an integral part of the effort to improve individuals’ lives. Adult education offers an opportunity for adults to refresh or pick up new skills, which they could use to achieve their career goals. Andragogy Adult Learning Theory, Adult learning programs must accommodate this fundamental aspect (Para 1). However, funding for adult education is a problem with the available classroom resources unable to meet the demand. This proposal seeks to show why funding for online literacy programs for adults is vital to adult education programs. Additionally, it shows why online adult education is preferable, as a teaching tool to traditional means, such as classrooms. The stake holders in this proposal is the teachers, the online adult learners, the online institution in which the academics will take place, and the people who will be ask to fund the adult online literacy program.
