Film Analysis
Assignment 4
Film Analysis
A close analysis of a film sequence helps us understand several aspects of the film as a whole. We’ve practiced close analysis to examine characters’ personalities and motives, relationships between setting and tension, clues that foreshadow, and messages about justice, leadership, and logic.
12 Angry Men is a classic because of its enduring messages about the capacity for human goodness and folly. From a class list (see below), you’ve chosen a film that deals with personal challenges and social conflicts. Both of these films reflect the class theme of the pursuit of courage. After considering our class discussions and the many analyses of film sequences, you will write a comparative analysis of two scenes.
Assignment:
In a 4-5 page essay, analyze the filmic elements of a scene from 12 Angry Men and a scene from one of the film’s below that contribute to the theme of “the pursuit of courage.”
Tips:
Use your film vocabulary to help support your analysis.
You may use “we,” but avoid “you” (second person).
Include a close analysis of two short scenes (pay attention to the cinematic details) as evidence for your claims.
Strong essays will focus on one filmic element in two scenes.
Think deeply rather than broadly about your response.
A successful conclusion will address why the films are still important or relevant.
This paper is due on Monday, November 23, at the beginning of class.
