Globalization and Democracy
Globalization is complicated process that can sometimes bring about many controversies. It has brought changes in the world and among them is the unity of several countries. However, as much as it has brought many countries together in some ways it has also drifted them apart (Platner and Smolar, 2000). The political culture of many countries around the world is one of the most controversial changes it has made. Democracy can be defined as a form of government in which the supreme power is conferred on the people and exercised directly by them. This paper briefly describes how globalization might shape democracy and how it might change my responsibilities as a citizen of my country or the world at large.
How can globalization shape democracy?
Globalization has helped expand the values of the democratic state. It has also assisted in promoting economic development that in turn has led to increasing in the number of educated citizens as a result of advanced training leading to economic growth (Mullard, 2003). International businesses also demand an increase in democracy. Peace and stability must be established in all countries that can potentially invest. Globalization also encourages decentralization of power by the states as they hand over their control to make progress in the market, which is essentially democratic. Reduction in information and travelling costs is another evidence that globalization has contributed to the development of democracy. People can quickly access information not only from their local government but also internationally (Rosow and George2014)
How can globalization shape your responsibilities as a citizen of your country (America) or the world?
As a citizen, I will have concerns and responsibilities for what will be happening to the whole world. I would be more involved with human rights, religious diversity, gender equity, and observing the rule of law, poverty eradication, protecting the environment, prevention and stopping disagreements between countries, and preservation of cultural diversity.
