History
What common reasons does Stephen Kinzer offer in his book Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq to explain attempts by the government of the United States to overthrow foreign leaders and their governments in the most recent 130 years?
Kinzer defines three periods for regime change during the last century 1) imperial phase; 2) covert action; and 3) invasion. Explain why these periods are different and briefly analyze one case study illustrating each of these periods.
Kinzer argues that although regime change may be successful in attaining its immediate objective it most often results in "blowback" and decreased US security. Give evidence to support and/or challenge this view.
What alternatives to "regime change" does Kinzer envision and what is your evaluation of his solutions?
