In this assignment, you will prepare an essay that focuses on one of the topics that we cover in this course in Parts I or II. In part I we study International Trade, and in part II International Finance. In case you need help with ideas, here you will find a non-exhaustive list: a) An overview of the trade profile of Spain. Remember that in Exercise 1 you have already collected some data on trade, the main products and destination areas… b) Commercial Policy: Study the level of protection in Spain through tariffs and quotas. c) Study economic sanctions: what type of sanctions have been imposed on Spain? What were the objectives? Did they work? d) The Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership: how do you think it will impact on Spain? e) The Balance of Payments: study the current account deficit or surplus of Spain and its implications. f) Exchange rate: what have been the main changes in the exchange rate system of Spain in the last decades and what are the reasons? g) Financial crisis: has Spain experienced a financial crisis? Why? h) Macroeconomic policies: study the change in macroeconomic policies in the last decades, the impact of joining the European Union (and the European Monetary Union if that is the case), etc. Sources of information: -Country analysis from the International Monetary Fund (www.imf.org), the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/), the national central bank or the ministry of finance of your country. -A good source of information for trade issues could be the European Commission DG Trade (http://ec.europa.eu/trade/) and the WTO (https://www.wto.org/). -Good sources of data, apart from the ones from the national central bank or ministry of finance of the country, are: IMF World Economic Outlook Database (http://www.imf.org/external/ns/cs.aspx?id=28), OECD Statistics portal (stats.oecd.org/), or Eurostat (http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/data/database). Extremely important: Each student is reminded that University of North Alabama emphasizes proper grammar, composition, and writing style across the university curriculum. All assignments should reflect appropriate writing skills. Plagiarism is a serious misconduct that violates the Honor Code and it will be penalized with a failing grade in the assignment. You can follow any writing style: MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association), etc. Please quote and reference properly your sources of information. Do not copy! The assignment should have an extension of 4 to 6 pages, not including tables, graphs and bibliography. It should be typed in font 12.
