King David and his dynasty come to represent the archetype of ideal kingship in Judaism. While subsequent Jewish tradition comes to remember David in an overwhelmingly positive light, his portrayal is actually quite mixed in the Hebrew Bible. Describe how David is characterized in the biblical narrative based on your reading of the assigned Bible passages(buttom). What seems to be the narrator’s overall attitude toward David and his kingship? Note both examples of David’s virtuous and repugnant character traits and acts as well as some points of ambiguity in the text.
