Literary Ghosts in British Nineteenth-Century and Modernist Fiction
Victorian and modernist literature teems with spirits. The genre of the ghost story emerged in the late nineteenth-century and flourished into the Modernist period. What can be explored in fiction’s fascination with the supernatural? Can its influence even on literary works characterized as “realist” be investigated? Considering the ways in which ghosts function in the literature of the two periods, what could literary phantoms tell us about genre, character, cultural critique, and conceptions of life and death? How can the appeal of the spectral be considered for early cinema and what can be discussed in the representation of consciousness in fiction, as authors rethought the idea of the “ghost in the machine”? While some writers accepted the reality of ghosts, others asked whether occult experiences should be understood as projections of the unconscious mind or optical illusions. Examining both literary and historical contexts, what topics could be taken up, such as the uncanny, insanity, the scientific study of the occult, and the spiritualist movement?
The A+ grade 13 page essay will be on Charlotte Bronte’s novel Villette. Please form your own thesis based on any one or two of the above questions as soon as possible because I need an essay proposal first . The 2 page essay proposal could be the introduction of the essay itself. The essay proposal must include what will be argued, explored or written about, the thesis, and a provisional MLA Works Cited or bibliography of 2 to 5 sources, one of which should be the primary work Villette. In essence, the 2 page essay proposal could be part of the essay itself but I truly need it first within 12 hours of submitting this order.
Specifically, in the essay proposal, a clear sense of the plan for argument about ghosts in relation to the novel Villette is absolutely needed. A clear and articulate thesis is really needed. In devising the topic, the overview must not be too large for a 13 page paper. As ideas are being developed, the scope has to be narrowed. Then, within that focus, the analysis of Bronte's novel, making an argument concerning its representations of ghosts, has to be further developed in the paper itself.
Please include an MLA bibliography for the 2 page paper proposal.
With the 2 page paper proposal and the 13 page paper itself, the total pages amount to 15.
