Model of play
Model of play: evidence of play observations, analyses, and planning undertaken in relation to model of play
This assignment will assess four of the learning outcomes stated in the unit guide: 1. Understand the importance of play as a pedagogical construct; 2. Critically analyse the assumptions and research base underpinning the range of theoretical perspectives of play enacted locally, nationally and internationally; 3. Analyse the use of observations of children as a mechanism to evaluate children’s play; 4. Creatively explore the principles of play as a construct for learning in schools, centres and homes. Details of task: -Students are required to prepare their own model of play as a concept diagram. You need to provide an analysis that includes the active practices and personal theories that have led to conceptualizing your model of play. You need to provide a play observation and explain how your model of play links to these ideas. It is important that you consider your pedagogical role and use theoretical ideas discussed in class in relation to your model of play. Further, the child's perspective is important and should be included in model and explanations. You need to think and write about theoretical ideas discussed in lectures, tutorials and from your textbook to help you create a conceptual diagram. All these ideas need to be included in your analysis of pedagogical role in children's play and your understanding of the child's perspective. We will be assessing you on: ? Provision of a model (visual representation) of your ideas and how well it is used throughout the assignment. ? Reflection and thinking of institutional practices. Institutional practices are as considered institution you are/had worked, preschool, family and/or community settings. This also relates to your personal practices such as what you value across your life in relation to play. ? Your ability to use theoretical ideas as discussed in lectures, tutorials and readings to inform your model. ? Provision of a play observation and how your model works in this observation and how you plan to use this model in your professional practice. ?? Your model and explanations are linked to an understanding of play that is pedagogical (your role as an educator) and consider EDF5024 Play and pedagogy - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2018 22 ? Your model and explanations are linked to an understanding of play that is pedagogical (your role as an educator) and consider and explain how you understand the child's perspective. Word count/equivalent: 2000 words or equivalent Weighting/Value: 50% Presentation requirements: Assignment needs to include: 1. Model of Play (200 words). You need to provide an original model of play and a brief explanation of the different elements selected in the play model. In this section you also need to explain what institutional practices you value. Remember you need to refer back to your model throughout all the assignment. Please provide a statement on how you plan to use this model in the future. 2. Play Example (500 words). It is recommended that during placement you focus on one child to plan a play experience or to make an observation of play. You need to show how you documented the experience (e.g. story, a narrative) when you observed your focus child. You need to give detail of the context, your focus child, other children and what happened while children played. In this section you need to include details of how you planned this play experience (e.g. play space, selection of objects, your pedagogical role) or if you planned to observe a play experience and the reasons why you selected this example. 3. Theoretical discussion (800 words). This section needs to include explanation of two or three theoretical ideas used in model of play. You need to make links to your play example and analyse it. 4. Explanation of your pedagogical role and child's perspective (500 words). You need to use theoretical ideas learned in the unit and link back to your play example.
