Each question is worth 25 points.
You may answer a 5th question for up to 10 bonus points.
Answer guidelines:
1) Each answer must be a minimum of 500 words, with the word count listed at the end of the answer.
2) Each answer must include at least 1 external citation (either of evidence of your argument, an outside resource, or an example or anything EXCEPT your book) **Do cite your book, however, when you use it.
3) This is a persuasion class - persuade me your answer is correct.
4) As a reminder, I expect proper grammar, spelling, formatting, ect. I reserve the right to deduct points for this.
Questions:
1) Chose, identify, and explain a viral campaign not mentioned in your text book or my in-class examples. Explain why the viral campaign has gone viral, detail your perspective on the ethicality of the campaign, and identify at least one other persuasive theory used by the campaign besides "word of mouth".
2) When dealing with propaganda, there are three basic types: white, gray, and black. Identify one of each kind of propaganda used historically, and identify what specifically makes that message white, gray, or black. Explain, using history, the repercussion of using said propaganda.
3) Reexamine brands and branding. We discussed in class 5 types of branding. Create, using Tarleton Fort Worth as your client, a unique brand for each of the 5 types. Explain why you chose the images/slogans/words you picked and why. Tie in additional theories as necessary in order to explain why a brand works. For each brand, identify if the changes would create cognitive dissonance, and explain why/not.
4) Explain how combining the sleeper effect and one of either the syllogism, paradeigma, or enthymeme works to create a persuasive message. Write a message that blends the two.
5) Argue (with support) whether there is a connection between social judgment theory and cognitive complexity. Does being cognitively complex allow for a larger or smaller latitude of acceptance/rejection/non-commitment? Why? How would persuasive messages aimed at moving an individual from a latitude of non-commitment into a latitude of acceptance make use of the theory of constructivism (cognitive complexity)?
6) Your text identified 5 theories/hypothesis that explain why we conform to group expectations and behaviors. Create a persuasive message for each of those theories/hypothesis that would convince someone to come to Tarleton Fort Worth. Give support and evidence for why your message fits that theory.
7) We discussed the concept of ultimate terms at length in class. Ultimate terms are broken into three types: God, Devil and Charismatic terms. Using one of each term (not from class or your book), create a persuasive message that puts the term to use. For example, using the God term "Family Values", I created a slogan (stemming from John Kerry) - "It's time for family values to mean valuing family". Once you've created your message, explain why the message fulfills the definition of each term, and how it would best be utilized.
8) Watch this video of the presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbrcRKqLSRw
It is an hour long, but you don't have to watch the entire thing (though it is fascinating). Watch at least enough of the video to be able to analyze the body language of the two speakers, Kennedy and Nixon. Using the types of non-verbal communication discussed in your notes and text, directly compare the two speakers, on a minimum of 5 elements. Argue who won the debate, based ONLY on non-verbal communication. Support your claims.
