Discussion 1: Homeostasis
Homeostasis depends upon the proper interactions of the various body systems. For example, the cardiovascular system and respiratory systems depend upon each other to carry oxygen to the cells of the body. The cardiovascular system transports blood to the tissue and to the lungs, while the respiratory system exchanges oxygen for carbon dioxide in the blood being transported to the lungs. If the blood was not properly transported to the lungs, cells would not receive oxygen even though blood might still flow to the tissues containing those cells.
Describe the interrelationship between two body systems of your choice. Give two examples of how they work together.
Discussion 2: DNA and forensic evidence
Imagine that you have been summoned to a jury which will be considering the disposition of a murder case. There has been a great deal of media coverage of this case and it has indicated that examination of DNA evidence will play an important role during the trial. The defense attorney asks you to explain your position on use of this type of evidence to determine guilt or innocence. What will you answer? Please explain your position.
Discussion 3: Organelles in disease
In the last module, we discussed the legal use of DNA analysis in forensic medicine. In this discussion, we will take a look at some of the internal machinery of the cell. Organelles are essential for specific functions associated with a cell. For example, you would expect to find an abundance of mitochondria in a cell involved in energy requiring process, such as active transport of an ion. Select an organelle and discuss what functions might be effected in the body if this organelle was defective.
Discussion 4: Oh no! Your epidermis is showing!
Epithelia form continuous sheets of cells that cover surfaces in our body. They are important in the formation of membranes which act as a barrier and interface between compartments of the body. Choose an area of the body covered by epithelia and explain how a break in this epithelial barrier might affect the functioning of a specific body membrane.
