The Future of E-Commerce
Many analysts and experts say that the growth of e-commerce is still predicted to occur as multitudes of people come online every year. Therefore more and more people are expected to evolve into regular buyers by each succeeding year. More businesses are likely to transition to online too, particularly the increasing number of small and medium enterprises. More businesses find it practical to conduct their transactions online because of the greater reliability of the technology of these companies especially with respect to security. The internet is slated to become the domain of these large and dominant companies still. On the other hand, this is also a signal for the other players in the field to improve their technologies and services such that the competition becomes lively and active.
Another report still states that e-commerce is still slated to grow by leaps and bounds because of geography. Asia by far is still a huge untapped market when it comes to e-commerce. Many European and North American buyers rely on Asian suppliers for their goods, and doing business online increases the convenience of doing so.
Also, the Asian and Asian-American markets are becoming more mature in terms of using the Net to procure products and services. As increasing numbers of Asians become online, so does the number of probable online customers. These persons may then be taken care of in such a manner so that they evolve into regular customers.
Therefore to stay alive in the e-commerce industry, players must first be able to take advantage of and adapt to newer technologies such that they are able to ‘play’ with the competition on relatively equal footing. Also, many ‘dot-coms’ are forming strategic alliances with other online merchants. This allows them to consolidate their core competencies, and increase their customer base as well.
One of the game-changing technologies to have transformed the World Wide Web and e-commerce is the open source software. Open source software is a communal body of code that individuals and companies develop at their own expense and then share it with each other freely (Miller, 2005). It is like accessing the building blocks from the net and from there the programmers can create a new version of the software. This means that anybody can access it, build a package and then sell it with absolutely no anti-piracy law infringement. The scheme behind open source is simple, if not noble. “When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the softer evolves
Indeed, because of open-source, the future of e-commerce is already here. One of relatively new technologies is the open source software. All current software companies, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, Apple and IBM, all agree that the “knowledge industry of the future would rely on a patchwork quilt of software” (Miller, 2005). Before, the knowledge industry largely relied on Microsoft’s Windows products. Microsoft was the undisputed champion of software development for more than a decade. Then open software changed everything. Alongside, the more user-interactive Web 2.0, open source technology ushered in the age of mobile apps and downloadable software. If we can predict the future of the World Wide Web five years from now, it will be characterized by a more open “open source” software. Right now, the technology remains accessible only to computer technicians. We see a future of the internet wherein the technology can be grasped even by average people. We see a future where everyone can design their own software and then design the functionality according to their e-commerce needs. This would be especially essential for diverse small-and-medium-enterprises who now operate their businesses online. This said, the future is not about product augmentation of existing software that serves as the infrastructure of e-commerce and the World Wide Web. That is not longer enough. There is no longer the race for the best technology and that only the richest companies afford and get a hold of the best software. The new movement of e-commerce is one that aims of diversity of software.
The inventor of the internet, Tim Berners-Lee, originally intended the World Wide Web to be an open-source. The computer scientist’s main idea was to link computers to each other with “no central manager, no central database and no scaling problems that could grow like the Internet itself, open-ended and infinite. More than any other person in the world, Berners-Lee has fought to keep the net open, free and non-proprietary. Open-source software aims for the same thing. Although, such source codes do not mean as free as in free beer; instead, it means free like free speech.
The future of the World Wide Web and e-commerce continue to tread toward this direction. It is just that the open source technology—and all this apps that we see popping up in applications stores now—have become the great equalizer in doing business online. Quite simply, companies will just stick to its original services of consulting and guidance. Everything else becomes a commodity, which means that selling software would be a thing of the past. As open source codes becomes easier to access and easier to understand, the more people get it and reprogram it according to their own personal and business needs. More than that, software and the infrastructure behind e-commerce can evolve specifically and accordingly with the clients’ needs. The free flow of capital, ideas and information are the thing that would change e-commerce in the coming years. E-commerce and software would soon evolve into open standards. For the layman, open standard is an underlying condition for economic and social progress because of its accessibility and freedom—it is like currency, the bill of rights, highway systems and internet protocols.
