Rape case discussion After watching the videos of ABC and CNN news cast, I realized they were treating the offenders as victims. In each video, they mentioned the victim in the beginning and then went to talk about the offenders. They both spoke about the offenders as victims and children who committed a mistake. In ABC the defendants lawyers had stated that “the picture was taken with consent.” One of the defendants Malik said they only took the picture for fun. However, if you see the picture, it clearly shows that the victim was getting dragged by the two defendants. The way CNN Spoke about the victim is what really grasped my attention. Poppy Harlow started her statement not talking about the victim but talking about the defendant. She spoke about the defendants as “promising, with high futures, star football players.” The way Harlow talks about the fact that alcohol was a “huge” mix in the situation, and how the defendants collapsed in court crying, shows that they barely cared about the victim. They did not say the words exactly, but they were stating that they should blame alcohol for this mistake. They even included the father of Malik, a former alcoholic, to whisper in maliks’ ear that he loved him for the first time in court which should have been irrelevant to the media. New York times shows an overview of what happened that night with all the evidence shown in court. That night the boys fingered her and she was too drunk to consent for sex. The 16 year old victim does not remember any details from that night, so mostly every evidence was through pictures and texts. There was a picture going around of her naked body in the bed past out. In one of the text messages, they referred to the victim as “dead body” (Oppel,2013.) The media in this case portrays the victim as an individual who had too many drinks and does not remember if she consented or not. They treated her as the person who ruined two promising athletes lives. It is insane because the media made the defendants seem as great kids who made a mistake. In CNN they stated that the defendants broke down crying and even though they were great athletes, they were still 16 year old kids. However, these 16 year old kids new exactly what they were doing, because in the new York times, it shows that Mr.Mays was texting the victim telling her “that they took care of her, she should be thanking them.”I find this to be a very cruel case because not only did they rape the victim, but also sent pictures of her all over social media. They thought since they were football stars, they were going to be able to get away with it. The media instead of helping the victim, they trashed her and allowed people to feel sorry for the defendants. CNN grieves that guilty verdict ruined 'promising' lives of Steubenville rapists.
