RNU – 108 Pediatric Project

At the end of this clinical project, the student will be able to: 1. Select an evidenced-based [Research Based] Nursing Article. The article should be related to a growth and development topic that is significant for the child 13 months to 6 years. At least one author must be a nurse to meet the criterion. 2. Write an annotated bibliography about the selected evidenced-based article. 3. Interview a parent(s) or primary caregiver of a child about the child’s overall growth and development. 4. Summarize in 1-2 paragraphs how the child’s growth and development in # 3 relates to the growth and development norms in the Hockenberry Pediatric book. 5. Apply the evidence provided in the student selected, evidenced-based nursing journal for growth and development and relate the article to the child interviewed. Directions: 1. Review growth and development in Hockenberry: for example-physical milestones, psychosocial task accomplishment [Erikson’s stages] and cognitive levels [Piaget’s stages] of the toddler, preschooler, and school-aged child by reviewing growth and development chapters in the Hockenberry text (chapters: 12; 13; 15). 2. Conduct an informal interview with the parent (primary caregiver) of a child who is age 13 months to 6 years of age. Focus the interview on the child’s physical, psychosocial, and cognitive development. Relate your findings to the established norms for the child’s age as noted in your Pediatric book [Hockenberry]. 3. Summarize in 1-2 typed paragraphs-how the child’s growth and development information from the interview relates to the norms for age and any factors that might be affecting the child’s growth and development. These 2 paragraphs are typed at the end of the Annotated Bibliography. 4. Submit a typed Annotated Bibliography for the evidenced-based article. [see instruction below]. Annotated Bibliography Requirements 1. Typed / 5 paragraphs 2. American Psychological Association (APA) format for citation. 3. First page for Annotated Bibliography: EXAMPLE [for a Journal article] – fictitious citation below: Smith, M. (2010). The impact of toilet training practices on toddlers’ activity levels. Journal of Growth and Development. 10 (1), 34-39. 4. First paragraph- describes the main significant points of article (~5 to 6 sentences). 5. Second paragraph – discusses what the benefits are of this evidence (research) to nursing and the care of young children. 6. Third paragraph- describe how the evidence cited in the article relates to the child identified by the student. 7. Fourth and Fifth paragraphs- Summarize in 1-2 typed paragraphs-how the child’s growth and development information from the interview relates to the norms for age and any factors that might be affecting the child’s growth and development. 8. Do not identify the family or child interviewed for this project by name or location. The child may be identified with initials of first / last name or simply as the toddler or preschooler. 9.
