the role of reading the Confucian canon in Zhu Xi’s theory of moral knowledge
In class we have discussed the problems with language and the question of what in fact
the Neo-Confucian believed should be learned in the pursuit of moral knowledge. Thus
we come to the question of the role Zhu Xi assigns to reading the canon in the search for
moral understanding.
In a four page paper discuss the role of reading the Confucian canon in Zhu Xi’s theory
of moral knowledge.
Please think about the readings and drawing conclusions from them.
A comment on grading:
What I look for in an A- paper is
? good organization
? good textual and logical support for arguments
? an indication that you have more-or-less mastered the main points of the readings
? reasonably grammatical English
What I look for in an A paper is
? all of the above plus an interesting approach to the material, something not found in
the books (or on the internet) that suggest real engagement with the texts
? Or, an absolutely solid version of the A- paper
As in Paper 1:
1. 12 point fonts
2. 1 inch margins (left, right, top, bottom)
3. double-spaced
4. no additional line between paragraphs
5. footnotes and block quotes should be single spaced
6. no need for a “Sources” page, since you will need to cite sources in your footnotes.
