The Running Man
Running Man Analysis ENG 103
Assignment Guidelines
Requirements:
A concise, well-written, analytical essay highlighting one of the major topics or themes presented in The Running Man. According to the Purdue OWL, "An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience." You might consider the following to get you started: How is the text constructed? What rhetorical strategies does it employ? How effectively is its argument supported? Refer to class discussions and lectures for how to most effectively analyze the text.
This essay must include, but is not limited to:
• Introduction with THESIS, body, and conclusion
• One article about either the book itself or about the topic area you plan to address.
• One other resource (book, pamphlet, website…) that has objective information about the topic.
• Works cited page
Notes for making this project easier on you:
• Be sure that the topic/theme you have chosen is analysis-worthy, meaning that you should be able to clearly identify King’s purpose for presenting this theme. Try to determine what you think King is arguing. You will need to provide supporting evidence for that purpose in the form of specific examples from the text.
• If you have a hard time deciphering the overall purpose, either choose another topic/theme or get some feedback from one of our amazing librarians, the Writing Center, fellow students, or your instructor.
• An effective analysis will look not just at a writer’s purpose, but the whole rhetorical situation (think of purpose, audience, stance, genre, design, and context).
• You should include a clear thesis statement that offers readers a concise, yet compelling insight into the book that may not be immediately obvious. Depth of thought is crucial in any analysis, so use your critical thinking skills.
• See rubric below for specific grading criteria.
