Topic: compare film industries between Hollywood and Bollywood
Order Description
Assignment #2- Research Paper.
Research paper (Six to eight pages including references): comparing and contrasting
two countries from two different world regions, and one of their media/telecom industries
(i.e. print, radio, television, film, Internet provider, or music). The U.S. should not be
selected for comparison unless you are an international student.
DUE DATE: Monday, November 23 at the beginning of class.
We will be grading primarily the quality of your analysis. Please, make sure that you
apply concepts that you are learning from the readings and from class lectures to explain
the systems and countries you choose to compare and contrast.
Basic Requirements:
Cover page: this should have your name, and the name and maps of the two countries
you are discussing.
Number of pages: Six to eight pages. This should include your reference or
bibliographical page at the end.
Proper citations and reference: You can choose APA, MLA, or Chicago styles.
The main objective of this assignment is to learn in depth about two countries by
comparing and contrasting them along with one similar communication system. This
assignment should lead you to learn about geography, political system, culture, and
communications of the two countries you select.
The assignment:
Select two countries of your preference. Remember that you cannot select the U.S. unless
you are an international student.
These two countries should not share borders. In order to learn more and to better
understand International Communication and its world implications, it is better to choose
countries from different world regions (i.e. Brazil and Nigeria OR Germany and Bolivia).
Provide maps of the two countries on your cover page.
1. Briefly describe their regional location, name the bordering nations and point out
if there are any current events of significance or points of relevance to specific
bordering nations (i.e. conflict, shared language).
2. Briefly provide current information about population, official language, other
languages or dialects, internal ethnic diversity if any, official religion and other
religions, levels of education (literacy, basic schooling and higher education).
3. Briefly provide current information on the political make up of the countries of
choice, for example who is the current President, what kind of government is it,
what is the type of economy they have (regional and extra-regional major trade
partners), how do they relate to the major powers in the world in terms of politics,
economics, and whether there is an internal or external political struggle.
4. Based on the context information you have provided discuss one communication
industry of your choosing (i.e. film, television, telecommunication, music,
magazines or other of your choice). This communication system must be the same
for both countries, so if for example you choose TV then you will be discussing
the TV system in both countries.
5. Provide a minimum of five sources for each country: three must be scholarly
work (journal articles, books, book chapters) and two can be non-scholarly work
and Internet based (i.e. Reporters Without Borders or any other web-based
information outlet beyond Wikipedia). Wikipedia is a good starting point, but it
should not be overused.
NOTE: All of the above information must be written in a narrative form where you
compare and contrast the two countries of study interweaving them. Do not just repeat
the facts you find, but reflect on/analyze the facts (use critical thinking). Think critically
about the meaning of the data you are finding. Also think critically about the domestic
and international implications of your findings based on everything that you may have
learned during this class and your own knowledge.
Example
Peru, located in South America, is a country with a landmass of 1,279,996 sq km; in
contrast India, located in Southern Asia has a landmass of 2,973,193 sq km. Peru
borders with Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador. In recent history (1980s-
1990s) Peru has had border issues with Ecuador, but these have been solved. India,
from time to time has had border problems with Pakistan (World Fact Book, cia.gov).
And so on…….
Both countries have a cultural and ethnic diversity, one can tell this based on
languages expressing such diversity. In India, English is the colonial language, but
their domestic spoken languages are Hindi 41%, Bengali 8.1%, Telugu 7.2%, Marathi
7%, Tamil 5.9%, Urdu 5%, Gujarati 4.5%, Kannada 3.7%, Malayalam 3.2%, Oriya
3.2%, Punjabi 2.8%, Assamese 1.3%, Maithili 1.2%. In Peru Spanish is the official
language, which was imposed in colonial times and 84.1% is fluent in it, then 13% of
the population also speaks Quechua and 1.7% speaks Aymara; both of these
languages are officially recognized. In the Peruvian Amazon basin there are hundreds
of other minor linguistic groups with very small populations, one of them is the
Ashaninka 0.3%. (World Fact Book, cia.gov)
Film as a technology and entertainment arrived to both countries almost
simultaneously around 1896-1897, and in both countries film first appeared in only
the largest cities. While in India film took off becoming an important industry, now
one of the three largest movie producers in the world, in Peru filmmaking as an
industry has continuously struggle. Peru has rarely produced more than 20 feature
films per year, and there have been times when it didn’t produce even one film per
year. And so on………
