Family Policy Research Paper: First Version
The First Version
First, please note that the first version of your paper is NOT A ROUGH DRAFT! The first version of your paper is you’re first, fully developed submission representing the best version of your course paper. The purpose of asking you to do this relatively early on in the semester is to provide you with useful feedback, that you can incorporate to enhance the quality of your final term paper.
• As such, the first version of your paper should contain all the 5 required sections and subsections as outlined. The first version should be full-length (8 pages of written text, formatted in APA style, double spaced, 1"margins, using a 12 pt. font). Not included in this total page count are a cover page, and a references page with at least 8 scholarly sources. The paper should include the following 5 sections and include headings and subheadings according to the following outline:
Feedback & Grading Rubric
1. Introduction (½ page) - Introduce the issue (i.e., problem influencing family functioning) and the family policy designed to address this issue/problem.
2. Issue (2 pages) - Present a well-documented, research-based description of your issue of interest including:
• Clearly state the issue/problem that you will discuss.
• Based on scholarly resources, describe the prevalence and seriousness of the issue/problem.
• Drawing from scholarly resources from the Human and Family Development literature, and using developmental terminology, discuss how this issue impacts individuals and families
3. Policy (2 ½ pages) Present a well-researched, detailed description of your policy of interest
• Clearly name, cite and describe the family policy you have researched and demonstrate that it constitutes a family policy according to Bogenschneider. Provide some details on the nature of the policy (e.g. state, federal etc.)
• Next, discuss in detail its aims and purpose (i.e., what does the policy do/regulate/provide?), provide a brief description of its history and current status (i.e. when was it first enacted? What is its current status?)
• Clearly explain how the policy addresses (or is intended to address) your issue of concern.
4. Major Players (2 pages)
Discuss the groups who have some interest in your policy and describe their positions. For our purposes a major player is a group or organization that has an interest in a specific issue and that actively works to promote specific policies to address the issue (e.g. the Republican or Democratic Party, the Children's Defense Fund, the Family Research Council, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the National Organization of Women, etc.)
o Identify and briefly describe at least two major players who are in support of the policy and at least two that oppose the policy. It is important to use their full name, their title and role, and organizational affiliation and the source from which you derived their opinion/position on your policy. Make sure you focus on support or opposition to the policy rather than your issue! For example, it is difficult to find organizations or individuals who are in support of child abuse - the issue/problem - so focus on their support of the policy that attempts to address the problem of child abuse. What is it about the policy that they support or oppose?
o Discuss the underlying reasons and values that inform these group's/player's positions. Values include possible religious beliefs, beliefs about the role of government involvement in shaping family functioning as well as beliefs about the ideal involvement of the state versus federal government.
5. Conclusion (1 page) Clearly state and defend your position on the issue/policy based on research evidence and your own values. Are you in support or opposition? Why? What do you recommend should be done to 'improve' the efficacy of the policy?
