Topic: Inheritance Investment Paper
Paper details:
A paper of approximately four (absolute minimum) to seven pages of text is required and will address how you would go about investing a $100,000 dollar inheritance for retirement. This paper is not to be simply dreams and schemes, but is to follow a number of specific parameters. You are not allowed to “spend” any of your inheritance, invest in a small business, give it away to charity, etc.
Instead, you must invest it exclusively in equity mutual funds. Also, because the focus is on fund selection, you are allowed to invest, at most, 25 percent in index or index-like funds. You may assume that the investment is tax-deferred, so that taxes do not play an immediate role, and that you are investing for a period of at least 30 years, so you are “locked-in” for that time.
The data source for this project will be the Morningstar Internet site and the tools it employs. There will be a demonstration of how to obtain what is needed for the paper in class. Your assignment in your paper is to make your investment allocation in specific funds, using the site to narrow your fund choices, explain/support your choices based on the chosen variables and your (stated) personal preferences, goals, attitudes towards investments. etc. The relevant variables are for you to determine from the possible choices, such as investment objectives, riskiness, performance, costs, or whatever YOU deem important. You then implement your decisions by allocating specific portions of your portfolio to the various funds you choose, based on the tools and knowledge you learn in class.
More Guidance on Project 2
Your paper should be double-spaced, 12 point font, one inch margins on the sides, top and bottom, and one-sided printing.
Your paper must include the variables (and their values) you use to screen for funds (“search criteria”) and a printout of your screening results (i.e., the funds). The data for the funds in which you choose to invest must be highlighted.
You may also wish to look at the fund summaries for more detailed data on funds in which you choose to invest. The inclusion in your paper of the one-page summaries is optional, however.
Specific Organizational Requirements (IMPORTANT)
Certain standards of organization are required to be met. The information in your paper should be submitted in the following order: The written section of the paper first, followed by the search criteria and then the fund screen results (with chosen funds highlighted). Results of additional searches follow. I am setting THREE searches as the minimum number. For easier reading, you must tab (with a physical marker of some sort) your searches.
Proprietary criteria that evaluate funds, like Morningstar (star) ratings and category ratings, should not be used. The object is for YOU to assemble the criteria that are appropriate for you.
Morningstar style box and category classification that do not rate the funds are OK to use.
Be sure to include and tab your search criteria, values, AND the highlighted results for your chosen funds.
All the funds you choose to invest in must result from one or more of your specific searches.
Put your search criteria and screened fund results in the same order as discussed in the text of your paper.
Remember to include your dollar allocations.
IMPORTANT: When writing your paper, do not talk about your fund allocations first. The order is important! First, talk about yourself as an investor, your goals, preferences, attitudes toward risk, etc. Then talk about how you translate those factors into particular criteria and fund screens. Lastly, talk about your fund results, choices, and allocations.
FINALLY: As a way of adhering to the School of Business writing policy and--more importantly--to encourage good writing, any paper not meeting the instructor’s standards for spelling, grammar, organization and overall quality will be returned ungraded and a grade of “Incomplete” assigned for the course. When an acceptable copy is resubmitted, the grade will be changed to a regular letter grade. If resubmission occurs before the final, then a grade will be given at the standard time.
