Assignment Sheet III for
Research Paper Topic: A subject of your choice to be explored from a Humanities Perspective Length: 7 full pages (double spaced) Format: MLA Style Number of Required Sources: Five (at least) Overview: Research essay requires you to demonstrate your skills in, 1) narrowing down a subject to a manageable topic and formulating an argument/research question around it; 2) conducting research in a responsible and scholarly manner in accordance with your chosen topic; 3) employing the MLA style while you're conveying your new-gained knowledge to an audience, who is supposedly uninformed on the subject; 4) interpretation, analysis, and synthesis of your sources; 5) convincing your audience as to the value of the work you've undertaken in conducting research and writing the essay.
You will formulate a specific enough thesis to be covered in seven pages on a subject of your choice, discuss sub-claims of this thesis in your body paragraphs by introducing your research material and its context, prove the validity of your claims by supporting your argument with textual evidence (direct quotations from texts, movies, statistics, etc.), and arrive at a synthesis of your personal ideas and authoritative sources. It goes without saying that you're expected to go beyond the obvious while formulating a thesis: your thesis is basically an argument and there is no point in arguing for a self-evident aspect of the subject. Also, remember that secondary sources are there to aid your argument not to guide it; your idea should lead the essay and your secondary sources should be carefully selected to complement this main idea, not to dominate and stifle it.
Register: The register and language you're expected to employ for this assignment are similar to that of the textual analysis. It should be professional and represent you at your best as a scholar. Try to formulate and articulate your ideas in a manner that is intellectually serious and respectful of your audience. This, however, does not mean that you cannot adopt a personal attitude towards your subject matter; feel free to be ironic, humorous, critical, consolidating. The main requirement is to strike a balance between your personal voice and scholarly writing. Do not use contracted versions of the auxiliary verbs (i.e., doesn't = does not, I've = I have, He's = he is, etc.), and slang words. Format: The research essay must be written according to the MLA guidelines. Whenever you cite a passage from your sources, you should put the exact sentence or phrase in quotation marks, provide author's name and page number in parentheses right after the quote, and blend the external source with your sentences in a graceful manner (quotations cannot stand alone in your text). You are expected to follow the conventions of responsible research when you provide the ideas of others to support your claims. Therefore, familiarize yourself with using signal phrases, to introduce your secondary sources and their contexts for the convenience of your audience. Apart from these stylistic conventions, you should provide a "works cited" page at the end of your essay to document and list your main and secondary sources in alphabetical order (the surname of the authors), so that your reader can find the source of your quotations whenever it is necessary. Mastering the MLA format is of vital importance in order to succeed in this workshop.
Research Sources and Tools: The number of sources you need to use for this paper is at least five. You're expected to do some research and reading after you come up with a specific thesis
