Topic: Transofmrational leadership in self-organizing/SCRUM teams
Order Description
References: in regards to number of references I have already included quite a few. However, I would at least need the 4 sources mention in the bottom in addition to at least 7 more.
Paper requirements:
I have written a first draft for a master thesis research proposal (called exposé in the document) on a project called LOS and handed it in to my professor. I got some feedback from him and guidelines which is explained in this text. First is some general information/feedback I got, then it will explain some of the details which needs to be covered in each section. When reading through the attached document (my draft of the research proposal) you will get a good idea of what what the thesis is about.
In the document, the text which is red does not need to be changed in any way.
In general, the make the research proposal needs to be more crisp and smoothly written and focus more on the scientific problem and not so much case project. It needs to address a theoretical problem that extends beyond the borders of the LOS project. The professor said:
“I do believe that you have such a problem at hand when focusing on leadership in self-organizing (and maybe even interorganizational) scrum teams. But you must carve that out much better and create a convincing scientific problem and research question. Testing whether generally accepted findings hold in a specific project (LOS) is not really rewarding. It is much more promising to focus on the specifics of self-organizing scrum teams (that do not have traditional leaders) and study leadership in these teams based on the LOS project.
Also, when using new references, place include them in the bibliography.
Problem Identification
In general, the section needs to focus more on the scientific/scholarly motivation and not some much the project. It needs to cover why is leadership in self-organizing teams different and worth studying from a theoretical perspective. It needs to argue what will this research bring which have not been researched before. Make sure you include appropriate literature and be precise in differentiating scrum/self-managing teams from traditional ones. Highlight where findings of leadership in traditional teams may not translate to such teams (scrum/self-managing teams). That is, summarize findings on leadership in traditional teams and show where these do not match the self-organizing team setting.
- Objectives and research questions
This section needs to be adapted to the new research questions (see below). As of now, it is written is to suit the previous research questions which are in the document (the first draft of the research proposal). The draft focuses on the leadership characteristics and effectiveness. However, It needs to rewritten to suit the new research questions listed below
a) How can leadership be conceptualized in self-organizing information systems teams?
b) Who exerts transformational leadership in self-organizing teams?
c) How does transformational leadership affect teams and team members of self-organizing teams?
In addition, you should create a few hypotheses and argue from a theoretical perspective why these hypotheses where chosen. It should also cover why they are interesting and worth studying.
- Method
include information on your desired research design and on the LOS project here. That book I cite is not enough regarding research design and method. At least also read and cite the works below. Make sure to show how each activity contributes to answering your research questions.)
The section also needs to include what the expected contributions to theory and practice will be.
Also, the section would also need to outline the details of the questionnaire. Meaning, what measurement items of transformational leadership will be utilized in the questionnaire. If you follow the transformational leadership literature closely, you will see that there are some well-established and validated measurement instruments. In other words, it would not make much sense to develop new ones, rather utilize the once from the transformational leadership literature.
Theoretical foundation:
The section I wrote on theoretical foundation is far from sufficient. The professor told me the following:
It does not make sense to include a simple list of constructs and their background like you have done pp. 7-13. Focus on the three questions above. Include the parts that are important for the reasoning leading to the three research questions in the problem identification (research questions) and the objective definition. Also, include a schedule of the planned activities with the single deliverables of each work package”.
I would expect a better literature overview on leadership in self-managing/agile information systems (development) teams. Moreover, you must provide a better research design based on literature. Here is some literature you should use:
