• Understand the principles involved in layout of ste elwork drawings; and • Have experience of producing a AutoCAD drawing of a steel portal frame structure All  civil  engineering  students  need  to  have  an  unde rstanding  of  how  structural  steelwork  is detailed and the process of producing a structural steelwork drawing. The following is to be undertaken: 1. We will use the A3 drawing frame that you produced in Exercise No 2. 2. Use the information on the attached Engineer’s desi gn sketch to produce an AutoCAD drawing that contains sufficient information regarding the general arrangement of the steel portal frame. 3. As this is a drawing exercise and you have not yet covered steelwork detailing on your course, examples of what your drawing should look like when complete is also attached. Your final submission should comprise one A3 drawing using the A3 drawing frame. 4. It is suggested that you start by drawing the cross -section of the main section (533 x 210 x 122 UB) and the purlin (172C23) – dimensional informati on is included in the following ‘Additional Guidelines’. 5. Progress:  This  is  a  2  week  exercise  with  a  submissi on  deadline  on  the  Friday  afternoon following the final class. You will therefore need to make sure you keep up with the class otherwise you will leave too much to do in the seco nd week. 6. If in doubt use the completed drawing attached to g uide you through the exercise.
