Final Independent Research Essay *5-7 pages excluding Works Cited list *Outline, plan, or ‘skeleton’ draft due: *Final draft due: Note: detailed instructions on how and where to turn in final will be provided the last week of class Sources: Four minimum; of which, at least one must be a primary source, and at least two must be academic journal articles. You must also include at least one creative or non-traditional source, and one full-length book source. Assignment: The F.I.R.E. project is where you should put together everything you have learned about in English 101 about formal, academic, research-based writing, via a sub-topic of your choice that is connected to LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION. In this essay, you should address issues you haven’t engaged with yet, and you should present analysis of your research in the spirit of academic symbiosis (and to prevent your essay from reading like a book report). Be sure to think of your audience with this final essay: what do you want to teach them; what ideas are you trying to persuade them to believe or accept? What have you learned? What is your scholarly perception of communicaiton and especially, your particular topic, now that you have completed all these weeks of researching, reading, writing, and thinking? Documentation: * Use MLA-style in-text (parenthetical) citations * Include an MLA-style Works Cited list at the end of your paper (does not apply toward page count, but does need to be on its own page.
